*Position Summary:*
Reports administratively to the health services administrator, clinically to the prescribing provider and supervised by the assistant HSA/director of nursing.
Performs assignments of considerable difficulty, to include care of patients housed in the Medical Observation area; uses expertise concerned with the care of the sick and injured, prevention of illness and promotion of good health in compliance with MTC Medical and customer directives.
*Essential Functions:*
1.
Plans and performs specialized and advanced nursing assignments of considerable difficulty.
2.
Uses expertise in assessing patient conditions and develops nursing plans that serve as a role model for others.
3.
Evaluates concepts, procedures and program effectiveness.
4.
Provides specialized nursing care to patients having illnesses and injuries that require performance of established nursing procedures.
5.
Renders expertise in caring for patients who are seriously ill, are not responding to normal treatment, have undergone unique surgical operations or who are receiving infrequently used medication.
6.
Attend sick call with the physicians to see detainees; prepare examining room and equipment.
7.
Call the physician for medication and treatment orders and other emergencies.
8.
Operate pill call, administer medication and accurately and completely document treatment as required by applicable policies and procedures.
9.
Examine and assess detainees with illnesses or injuries or detainees who become ill or injured; confer with physician to refer detainees to the emergency room as required by their condition and document in medical record or other forms as appropriate
10.
Maintain clean work area; use or direct the use of appropriate sanitation methods.
11.
Practice basic cost containment and utilization management for patient care and facility operations.
12.
Maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records; observe applicable HIPAA rules.
13.
Review medical files to determine all provided services are documented.
14.
Closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses.
15.
Comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
16.
Inspect medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by detainees; securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment.
Control medication, syringes, or other medical supplies.
17.
Perform work on an on-call basis, as required.
18.
Provide health counseling and health education on individual or group basis, as required.
19.
Prepare and maintain narrative, statistical, summary and operational records, reports and logs.
20.
Assist corporate counsel with responses to detainee lawsuits.
21.
Attend scheduled staff meetings, promote communications and flow of relevant information in the medical unit.
22.
Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures; take appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
23.
Properly chart medical care.
24.
Initiate and complete investigations and inquiries with accuracy, as directed, gather information and evidence, interview and obtain the statements; exercise independent judgment by determining when probable cause exists to recommend disciplinary action.
25.
Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering basic emergency medical aid, physically removing people away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from confined areas.
26.
Interpret an extensive variety of medical and technical instructions in the form of handwritten text, correspondence, policies, regulations, procedures, reports, directions for forms completion and other documents.
It is expected the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned with in his/her scope of work determined by management.
*Education and Experience Requirements:*
Degree in nursing, current, valid nursing license for the state of California.
Must possess current CPR certification.
Must work within California state board of nursing scope of practice.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Valid driver’s license in the state of California with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
*Post Hire Requirements:*
Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and maintain appropriate facility clearance.
