The SDSU Imperial Valley Student Affairs unit, working in conjunction with the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity at the San Diego campus, are mutually responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU’s staff and faculty.
Areas of services include but are not limited to, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Educational Opportunity Programs, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Veterans Services, Student Ability Success Center, Student Health Services, Student Life and Leadership, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Testing Services, and Supporting the Associated Students.
Under the direction of the Dean for SDSU Imperial Valley, the Dean of Students is the lead administrator for the Student Affairs unit.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION Under the supervision and direction of the SDSU IV Dean of Students, Healthcare/STEM Retention Specialist will assist in efforts to support STEM students at SDSU Imperial Valley as a part of the DHSI Title V Grant.
The program Healthcare/STEM Retention Specialist will also assist the Grant Project Director/PI and Program Manager/Co-PI.
The incumbent for this position will provide academic advising to enable students understand their collegiate experiences at different levels of awareness via personal growth, co-curricular programs, and advising.
The position is responsible for daily administration; formulation and implementation of fiscal policies and program development direction; research project coordination; academic, and career advising of students; initiation and maintenance of record keeping for grant purposes; and provision of outplacement services for participants.
The program Healthcare/STEM Retention Specialist is responsible for providing counseling and academic advising for scholars related to academic advisement, course selection, evaluation, adjustment from high school and/or CC, financial aid follow-up, interpretation and referral, personal counseling related to self-awareness, personal growth, peer relationships, and family expectations/problems.
The program Healthcare/STEM Retention Specialist will also maintain communication with the collaborating student services programs to monitor student career development and academic progress.
The incumbent will be part of the Student Affairs unit at SDSU Imperial Valley and assist with the overall strategic plans and goals for the university, division, and campus.

Responsibilities: Retention 65% Will work in tandem with academic advisors to improve retention and student satisfaction with the college experience.
Will partner with campus leadership to identify shared challenges and opportunities related to student success.
Will provide outreach and support to students identified as at-risk in their freshmen year and for transfers in their junior year.
Will offer workshops on topics related to the retention of students (e.
g.
, study skills, time management, etc.
).
Will consult with students experiencing academic difficulty: assist them in identifying reasons for the academic difficulty and directing them to student support services.
Will develop and implement strategies to address the academic support needs of students who are at-risk for retention.
Will create and implement messaging campaigns for students identified as at risk.
Will develop and implement programs to increase retention and facilitate graduation.
Will work with students on academic probation, at-risk of not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements for financial aid, not enrolled, subject to disqualification and who have been disqualified providing follow-up and support.
Will utilize EAB Navigate (SDSU Retention Platform) to manage outreach and track at-risk student engagement.
Will utilize EAB Navigate to conduct Early Alert Progress Campaigns and facilitate the outreach and support of students identified as at-risk.
Will research successful college/university retention programs to identify best policies, practices, and procedures.
Will make recommendations based on identified best practices identified.
Collaborate with Outreach Specialist, faculty, and student affairs staff in the development and implementation of the SDSU-IV Aztecs Leadership Institute Coordinate campaign with Retention Specialist on outreach and re-enrollment of students who have stopped out of the university.
Organize focus groups for students who have re-enrolled after stopping out.
In coordination with Career Services, the Cross-Cultural Center, the Academic Learning Center, faculty, and Student Health Services develop and implement Student Enrichment Activities.
In coordination with the Academic Learning Center Coordinator develop and implement mentoring programs (peer & faculty staff) to support STEM students.
Oversee pairing of students with potential faculty or staff mentors as a part of the mentoring program.
Support the NSF Summer Bridge Math Experience (SMASH) Program.
In collaboration with the SDSU IV Outreach Specialists, EOP San Diego and the Dean of Students develop and implement the SDSU IV Summer Bridge Program for STEM students.
Support student participation in the SDSU’s Global Seal of Biliteracy program Work in partnership with the Career Services Coordinator to assist students to prepare for applications to graduate programs, internships as well as employment.
Support students’ participation in Applied Experiences including research and grant writing In coordination with Career Services help students identify and apply for opportunities to gain relevant Healthcare or STEM hands-on experiences.
Grant Activities 10% Assist Project Coordinator with data (annual)for the grant projects to include re-matriculation for re-enrollment students; persistence of re-enrollment & first-time students in Nursing, Public Health & Math; graduation rates in Nursing, Public Health & Math, and other grant-related activities.
Assist Project Coordinator with conducting program assessment for summer bridge, mentoring, career services, and other grant activities.
Academic Advising 20% As part of the Student Affairs team, assist the Student Affairs department with strategic plan goals and other duties as assigned.
Have general knowledge and provide information and appropriate referrals to students with regard to all campus programs and services including, but not limited to, university admission requirements, testing information, Student Health Services, financial aid, scholarships, study abroad opportunities, tutoring services, Career Services, Educational Opportunity Program, Student Disability Services, university policies.
Assist in coordinating the advertisement of SDSU IV STEM students assisting the lead advisors in providing lower and upper division students with information on their specific major.
Major(s) to be assigned by the supervisor.
Assist students in planning their coursework to meet their graduation goals.
This includes but is not limited to evaluating student transcripts to determine lower-division coursework completion, evaluating GE certification, evaluating transfer and upper-division competency requirements, assisting with petitions, assisting to declare and/or change a major or minor, explaining graduation requirements, developing an academic plan for the student, and providing career guidance.
If assigned major(s) require an International Experience Requirement, assist students by providing information on options and the initial process to complete this graduation requirement.
Assist students with completing RAAR to clear requirements.
Advise students, within the assigned major(s), with regards to completion of a minor(s) from various departments.
Provide students information regarding extra-curricular activities that will enhance students’ college experience including, but not limited to, internships/volunteer work, study abroad, student life and leadership (student government and campus organizations), and conferences (for personal and professional growth).
Develop, implement, and facilitate advising workshops and orientations for students.
Responsible for providing and maintaining accurate, relevant, and up-to-date academic advising information, with relation to assigned major(s), for the campus website, social media, and printed materials.
Assist in promoting academic major(s) assigned by conducting recruitment and outreach.
Assist with the retention of students in assigned academic majors(s) by contacting those who take a semester off or are on leave of absence.
Help the Dean of Students by providing information regarding super seniors in assigned major(s).
Maintain an excellent working relationship with Student Affairs staff and faculty in the Division of the assigned academic major(s).
Use EAB Navigate to schedule and maintain accurate, relevant, and up-to-date academic advising appointment information.
Maintain an excellent working relationship with the academic advisor(s) and graduation evaluator(s) for the academic major(s) assigned from the SD Campus.

Minimum Education Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in healthcare, physical or behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Minimum Experience Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills Education: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, higher education, student affairs or job-related field.
Experience advising and/or counseling underrepresented, low-income and first-generation college students and working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
Experience conducting presentations in small and large group settings: facilitating workshops using effective public speaking techniques.
Experience advising and/or counseling students in academic and/or co-curricular settings.
